First Digital Literacy Training for Pre-Service Teachers in Nigeria
T_CEIPEC made educational history by conducting Nigeria’s first comprehensive digital literacy training specifically designed for pre-service teachers through the STRIDE program. This pioneering initiative recognized that preparing future educators with robust digital competencies is essential for transforming Nigeria’s education system to meet 21st-century demands.
The two-day intensive training was held in the College’s state-of-the-art twin computer laboratories, each with a capacity of 200 workstations, providing participants with hands-on access to modern technology infrastructure. In partnership with the British Council, the program focused on equipping student teachers with practical skills in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into pedagogical practice, ensuring they graduate ready to lead digital transformation in Nigerian classrooms.
Participants engaged in module-based learning covering essential digital competencies including effective use of educational technology platforms, creation of digital learning materials and multimedia content, implementation of blended learning approaches combining online and face-to-face instruction, utilization of learning management systems, digital assessment and feedback strategies, and online collaboration tools for student engagement. The training emphasized not just technical skills but pedagogical integration, ensuring that technology serves as an enhancer of learning rather than an end in itself.
Master trainers from T_CEIPEC, certified through the British Council’s STRIDE program, delivered the training using experiential learning methodologies. Participants received certificates upon completion, recognizing their readiness to integrate digital tools effectively in their teaching practice. This groundbreaking initiative has established a model that can be replicated across Nigerian teacher education institutions, ensuring that the next generation of teachers enters the profession equipped with essential digital competencies.
