STEP Program Enhances English Proficiency for 500 Educators

Recognizing that teacher English proficiency is a critical national challenge affecting the quality of instruction across Nigerian schools, T_CEIPEC partnered with the British Council to launch the transformative STEP (Strengthening Teacher English Proficiency) program. This initiative addressed the pressing need for enhanced language skills, improved classroom communication, and refined pedagogical methodology among educators.

The comprehensive program enrolled 450 in-service teachers from PSUBEB and 50 faculty staff members from FCE Pankshin in a flexible 60-hour self-study course comprising 20 carefully designed units. Understanding the demanding schedules of Nigerian teachers, the program offered a self-managed learning approach allowing participants to complete one unit per week at their own pace. Learning materials were delivered through both print and audio formats, with SD card-based audio resources ensuring accessibility even for teachers in remote areas without reliable internet connectivity.

A distinguishing feature of STEP was its robust support system. Peer mentoring groups led by trained teacher mentors and supported by faculty staff created collaborative learning environments that fostered continuous improvement and professional dialogue. This community-based approach not only enhanced individual language competencies but also built sustainable support networks among educators.

Participating teachers reported transformative changes in their classroom practice, including the effective use of engaging warmers to activate prior knowledge, implementation of learner-centered teaching approaches that prioritize student engagement, and adoption of diverse grouping strategies that make learning more interactive and effective. The program’s success demonstrates the power of accessible, contextualized professional development in transforming educational practice.
